Lightbulb Bottom Cleaning

Maybe a dumb question but the other day my wife and i were watching sailing videos and were watching a couple scrape the bottom of their boat. When people pull their boats the first thing they do is power wash the bottom. So the question is, has anyone ever tried power washing the bottom while the boat is still in the water instead of scrapping with a putty knife?

Re: Bottom Cleaning

I have used a pressure washer to get algae off of a pool.
The water slows the jet down so much that you have to be very, very close for it to work, so you would be cleaning a very small section, and since your holding it so close, it’s likely to damage your paint.
Then there is the issue of holding a reaction jet in Your hand, so staying next to the Boat is going to be tough.
So easy to just wipe the boat down once a month so no scraping is required, if your scraping regularly, likely you need a new bottom.

Re: Bottom Cleaning

We have our boat power washed as soon as it comes out of the water when the fouling is still wet. I can't imagine how you would power wash the hull with the boat still in the water. If it wasn't washed off at haul-out it would dry and require scraping, a tedious and dirty job. Perhaps the couple you saw had just bought a neglected boat? Or perhaps they were scraping off old anti-fouling ("bottom paint")? That needs doing after a few years. Another tedious and messy job.

Re: Bottom Cleaning

1.- Using a pressure washer on anti fouling paint underwater will absolutely blast the paint off the hull.

2.- If you have to use a scraper (or a pressure washer) to remove fouling growth, you have waited much too long to clean your hull.

Re: Bottom Cleaning

Here in Florida, I have a dive company wipe the hull every other week. If you let the growth turn hard, you'll be removing your bottom paint along with it.
