boatnameregistry

There is an ad in BoatUS magazine by the subject company to "Protect Your Boat Name Safely and Securely" for only $17/year. Am I the only one who thinks this is a scam?

Not even a “good” scam.

Re: boatnameregistry

I was really surprised that BoatUS would run that ad in their magazine. Part of the pitch is that if someone else tries to register the same name/hailing port, they will inform them that that combination is not available. I guess in that case they will return your $17. Fat chance.

Is there a law preventing two boats having the same name/hailing port?

Not in the USA. Not uncommon to see boats with the same name/hailing port, even in the same marina. And of course, state registered vessels can apply a name and a hailing port on their vessel even though neither the name nor the hailing port are required or recorded for a state registered vessel. State registered vessels are numbered. Only US Coast Guard documented vessels are required to have a name and a hailing port displayed and which name/hailing port are recorded in the vessel registry. But there is no requirement that a USCG documented boat have a unique name/hailing port combination.

I believe in some countries they do require unique name/hailing port and even that the hailing port be an actual port. In the USA the list of places one can register as a hailing port is any place listed in Publication 55DC of the Department of Commerce which list covers just about everywhere and everyplace, including cemeteries, schools, shopping districts, dry lakes, mountains, national parks, pretty much if it has been named you will find it on the geolist. The hailing port does not have to have any water or access to water.

46 CFR § 67.119 - Hailing port designation.
CFR
prev next
§ 67.119 Hailing port designation.
(a) Upon application for any Certificate of Documentation in accordance with subpart K of this part, the owner of a vessel must designate a hailing port to be marked upon the vessel.

(b) The hailing port must be a place in the United States included in the U.S. Department of Commerce's Federal Information Processing Standards Publication 55DC.

(c) The hailing port must include the State, territory, or possession in which it is located.

(d) The Director, National Vessel Documentation Center has final authority to settle disputes as to the propriety of the hailing port designated.

(e) Until such time as the vessel owner elects to designate a new hailing port, the provisions of paragraph (c) of this section do not apply to vessels which were issued a Certificate of Documentation before July 1, 1982.

In the UK it depends on the type of registration..
SSR it matters not how many have the same name..
Patr1 however does not permit that as I found out back in the 80's.

many national registries require you to use a designated port of registration , rather then just any port

Re: boatnameregistry

So if the is the case in the US....then there is nothing to protect for $17.

I was referring to the boat name..
However in the UK my home ports have varied from Cowes to Poole and others.. one even was Coventry.
