A boat's name should be one which befits the lady she is. Is she just pretty or powerful, is she willful or passive, testy and twitchy, or protective and safe?
Consider naming your boat with the care you would afford the naming of a child.

Please don't go down the pomposity road of naming you boat, then adding its port as part of the name, as in 'Regal of Portsmouth'...unless you wear a full beard and introduce yourself as 'Cap'n Bob' or similar, as we all like to know in advance when there is a wanker in the room.

Some acronyms can have a nice roll to them such as 'Sadarar' (Sex and drugs and rock and roll), but 'Woftam' (Waste of f*****g time and money) says more about you than it does about the boat.

If you are genuinely naming something which you depend upon and love, you should provide it with an appropriate name and Dingbat From Hell, just doesn't cut it.

If you are coastal or lake, feel free to go with the joke name, the nautical or otherwise punning name, or the "cute" name.

If you are passagemaking or ocean-crossing, go with something the SAR people won't need you spell out from the awash deck.

It's not hard to come up with a distinct, memorable name that won't be screwed up in every foreign port and on every radio hail.

But it's not something a lot of people think entirely through.

I do not, and will not ever refer to myself as Cap'n or anything similar. No Skipper, chief, etc.

Still, I have three children, and I do not think a boat needs to be named similar. I appreciate your views, but spending time to name her shows my affection, as well as me spending time to keep her pristine.

I have been known to be the a$$, but lovingly referred to as such.

I'm not suggesting you call your boat 'Billy' or 'Betty'. I am merely suggesting that you should apply the same considerations when choosing a name for your boat as you do for the other things in life which you love.

It isn't the same. When naming my son, we needed to had some major considerations. Sean Long is an awful name, for the 8th graders would have called him schlong. So we made Sean his middle name.

The considerations are not the same. Only our feelings will be hurt if someone doesn't like the name. Her feelings will not suffer one way or the other.

The vessel name probably won't have any nautical "cliche" attached to it. It's like beating a dead horse. Everyone does that.

We want something unique, and hard to forget. Something that may make you smile when hailed over the radio, maybe laugh, but not something inappropriate for children to hear.

We're aiming more for funny, not cute. The best thing our lovely vessel could have is a name that is unforgettable.

Just my 2c worth, but I don't like joke names, I like women's names for sailboats.
My first boat I named Mrs Robinson, because she was my aging seductress.
Current boat was named "Splash" by the builder, sheesh!
I plan to change her name to "Catherine"or "Caterina" - after the shrew in Taming of the Shrew.
'Cos she's such a bitch to work on, but I'll tame her yet...

I removed my old boat name last year and have been waiting for that defining moment that gives my new boat name meaning.

I think I've finally found the moment(my compadre/my cat drowned last week) and I think I've found the name, a dear departed friend's(died in April), words when he would greet my compadre . . . Windsor.
