Bird’s Nest in my boom

Not lines tangled….an actual bird’s nest.

Sitting in my cockpit with my son having a cocktail when we see a small sparrow or wren flies into the end of my boom.

My son taps it and he flies out, looks in the end and there is a female and a nest.

He taps on the boom again and the female flies out. No idea if eggs are in the nest….it appears that maybe they are still building it.

Think we will be highly disruptive when we go sailing tomorrow unless anyone has any ideas or suggestions.

I guess I need to find a way to put a cover over the end of it in the future.

Re: Bird’s Nest in my boom

Birds nests in the top of masts where the halyards enter are common in yachts not used to actively sail at least every few months ,also in folded sails on booms plus in each boom end.just part of looking after your vsl i.e investment .⛵️⚓️

Dug it out….industrious birds. Huge nest, three eggs.

Put it close by, hopefully they will find it.

Re: Bird’s Nest in my boom

Birds can nest surprisingly quickly, and fit in holes a bit smaller than a golf ball. If you can't install a hard plate, or if you have internal ropes you need to move often, you can plug the holes with rags or what worked best for me was something akin to pillow stuffing. They won't dig it out. It also dries quickly if it gets wet. I haven't had any issues with anything growing in it.
