As your knew to sailing you will quickly learn that a "stink boat" is defined by anything without a mast and sails.
Does this mean you don't consider my trawler a "stink boat" as it has mast and sails?

Re: Biggest Irritant ?

Varnish! Not the kind in the carburetor! It's an endless, useless, messy job, it wears off in one season rain or shine. You get started and the weather gets bad for a few days. Then your tape goes to crap, or worse, the tape gets too much sun and wont come off. You only find the drips on your deck days later when they are hard and in the non- skid. You try the 2 part epoxy under the varnish technique, two years later its all peeling up and impossible to remove! If you let it go people assume it's a derelict boat... arghhh. Just say no to exterior wood!

Dunning and Kruger, two researchers at Cornell University, described their findings in a paper entitled “Unskilled and Unaware Of It: How Difficulties In Recognising Ones Own Incompetence Lead To Inflated Self-Assessments”, in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

Their conclusions can be summarized this way:

1. Incompetent individuals tend to overestimate their own level of skill,

2. Incompetent individuals fail to recognize genuine skill in others,

3. Incompetent individuals fail to recognize the extremity of their inadequacy,

4. If they can be trained to substantially improve their own skill level, these individuals can recognize and acknowledge their own previous lack of skill.

None of these characteristics are limited to men.

It's amazing how adept psychologists are at taking taking things we all already know from our own common sense and turning them into gov. funded research projects that they then use to enhance their professional reputations.

I see no evidence that this was Government-Funded research.
Notwithstanding, what you think you know an unexamined belief)may not actually be so.
In actuality, your assumed common sense, may not be as sensible as you believe. See the research, and the first 3 conclusions.

Re: Biggest Irritant ?

One of my major irritants is “anti-intellectualism”.

Anti-intellectualism is hostility towards and mistrust of intellect, intellectuals, and intellectual pursuits, usually expressed as the derision of education, philosophy, literature, art, science, and "theory" as impractical and contemptible.

Anti-intellectualism demonstrates hostility towards and mistrust of intellect, intellectuals, and intellectual pursuits, usually expressed as the derision of education, philosophy, literature, art, and science, as impractical and contemptible.

An intellectual isn’t necessarily someone more intelligent, or with more knowledge than the norm (although IMHO, they’re more likely to be both). It just means that the person highly values the mind, thinking, and the pursuit of knowledge.

And it’s frightening, to me, how few intellectuals I personally know.

Anti-intellectuals (people who deride the mind, who pride themselves on not thinking, on not using their reason), on the other hand, are everywhere.

The problem is not just in the things we do not know; it's the alarming number of people who have smugly concluded that they do not need to know such things in the first place.

Thanks for pointing out this paper, GordMay. I enjoyed the humor in the "Concluding Remarks."

It would be unusual not to cite the funding source in a study such as this. You'll find such a citation in the footnote at the bottom of the first page, where it states: "This research was supported financially by National Institute of Mental Health Grant RO1 56072."

As an over educated male; this thread is starting to make me feel stupid and worthless! But since I kind of had this belief at the start there may still be some hope.

But "overactive" and AD/HD aren't the same thing, and they've found the gene for RLS.

They're real disorders -- both of them. i certainly could accept someone disagreeing with that -- if they have MD after their name, of course.
