A 69-year-old sailor is lucky to be alive after being rescued by the Canadian Coast Guard in high winds and heavy seas off southwestern Nova Scotia on Nov. 19.
The crew at the Clark’s Harbour small lifeboat station were tasked at 4 a.m. by the Joint Recue Coordination Center in Halifax to a distress call of a 32-ft sailboat in trouble approximately 50 miles offshore, with the possibility of the vessel being dismasted, taking on water with one person aboard.
Yikes, that was some rescue. Doesn't sound like the rescuee was much help in the process. I wonder where this guy was going at this time of year.

Thank you for posting that, Prairie Chicken. I found it quite moving.

Definitely a big congratulations to the whole rescue crew, good on 'em all!

Re: Big Kudos to the Coast Guard! Job well done!

Thanks, very interesting read. I hope I never have to find out, but I sincerely hope I don't end being "that guy" if I ever get in trouble out there. I'd like to think I'd plan ahead to avoid the situation, but if it happened anyway, I'd be a participant in my own rescue, rather than an obstacle!

At any rate, a lot of lessons there. Everyone who ventures out on the water should read stories like this.

Somewhere less stormy and a little warmer I'd guess. Rescue workers don't get near enough credit. Bravo CG.
