I love Maker’s Mark original better than any other I’ve imbibed to date. I’ve been drinking bourbon for decades. Jim Beam is much harsher on my tongue and only $10 less ($28 vs $18). Second would be Willett PotStill but $20 more per bottle. Henry McKenna 10 Year Old is fabulous too, but hard to find in PA. Maker’s and Willett are my wife’s favorites too. She and I do NOT shoot good whiskey, but we mix Jim Beam.

Indeed. Definitely, Jack is the world's whiskey. If you walk into a bar in any port in the world, and there is only one American whiskey, it will almost certainly be Jack. I will say that most top shelf bourbons to me are a bit more sippable than Jack Daniels (but at twice the price) but you can do a lot worse, and it mixes very well, too.

After multiple blind testings - regular Jameson, invariably. Don't know about mixers.

Re: Best Whiskey

I was always a beer guy but have developed an affinity for Irish Whiskey. So far, my favorites are Redbreast 12 year old ( about $60 a bottle ) and Redbreast 21 year old. ( about $350 a bottle). The 12 year old is very nice. I love its aroma and taste. The 21 year old is just something special, only for special occasions in my book.

Shameless plug: StauningWhisky, without a doubt. I am, however, slightly biased 😂

Whiskey? I keep 150 proof rum. It’s great for cuts and scrapes, upset stomach, or works as a cleaning fluid.

With such a great taste you are welcome on my boat at anytime.
Currently I have a bottle or two on my boat; the one that I can highly recommend to have on board is the Talisker Dark Storm.
Cheers!

Re: Best Whiskey

Wheeee, a thread I can feel confident participating in!

We love the Four Roses Single Barrel and the double-oaked Woodford Reserve. He likes it with a cube; I prefer it straight, mmmmmaybe a drop or two of water in there. Maybe.

Re: Best Whiskey

I do like a good scotch, but when aboard and the sun is over the yardarm I really prefer a good dark rum - and none is better than Koloa Kaua'i Dark.

I am inclined to agree with you, up to the point where you bring in JD... it's a totally fine mixer (like white label Jim Beam), but calling it good, against the litany of good Whiskey/Whisky is a stretch. I think the cheapest bottle in my cabinet that I'd have people mix with is Woodford Reserve.

Everyone's tastes are different, but my current favorites:
  • Bourbon: Blantons
  • Rye: Basil Hayden Port barrel aged
  • Canadian: Whistle Pig 12 year Rye
  • Irish: Sexton
  • Scotland:
    1. Islay: Lagavulin 16
    2. Skye: Talisker 10 (if you can find it, the limited run 18 year is better)
    3. Speyside: Macallan 18
    4. Japanese: Suntori (including because it's in the Scottish style, rather than its own thing like Bourbon/Tennesse/Rye/Canadian

There's also weird stuff like Skrewball Peanut Butter whiskey, which is great for making milkshakes or strange cocktails, but I wouldn't drink it alone. Same with the Howler Head Banana (combine with the screwball and you're mostly to an Elvis sandwich ), or the Knob Creek Smoked Maple (which is actually really good on its own, but feels like something to have with pancakes).

I think the beauty of whiskey/whisky is that it doesn't need refrigeration or ice to be good, unlike beer or cocktails, so there's a space/efficiency aspect to it.

Re: Best Whiskey

If you don't know, get the cheapest RotGut you can find, you obviously don't know the good stuff from the bad!

Re: Best Whiskey

It's not whiskey but El Dorado is an excellent rum. E. Dorado 16, a little expensive but wonderful.
