Best type of Naugahyde for cockpit cushions

After a botched job for new cockpit cushions our vendor has agreed to replace our new cockpit cushions. We had done then in sunbrella and after 3 months it's pretty clear that keeping them clean will be IMPOSSIBLE. So we are using this as an opportunity to switch to Naugahyde.

On their website there are several types. Does anyone know or can they recommend which they have found to be the best for both comfort AND durability?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Best type of Naugahyde for cockpit cushions

Can't really help with the question, but I'll add my 2cents on our experience. We made new cushions last year, using 2" open cell and Sunbrella. What we have experienced is the cushions are far to soft so we are in the process of redoing the bottoms using 11/2 close cell under the 2" open cell. Should make for a comfy cushion.

To the question of Sunbrella being hard to keep clean... I'll agree! We take our covers off and wash them about every 2 to 3 weeks. With that being said our cockpit can be fully enclosed and we keep it that way except for the side curtains up when it's warm. Which does helps in keeping the cushion clean. I guess we feel Sunbrella is more comfortable and just looks better so we are willing to put up with the extra effort to keep them clean.

Re: Best type of Naugahyde for cockpit cushions

With our 3 kids (and one on the way!) we are making the switch while we can material wise. The sun really looked 5 years old after 2 weeks and that's one area I can't be addressing with a wash down every 3 weeks. Definitely not as appalling on the eyes which is a bummer. We had a really cool multiple colored stripe pattern but man after one group of friends that came sailing we had like 4 stains just from sunblock... Bummer it's not more resistant to stain bc it's also most certainly much more comfortable!

But alas we turn to the naugy....

Sorry to hear that. The stains have washed out of ours so far. Although with that being said my girlfriend is pretty anal about everything, especially those cushions! She treats them with all kinds of stuff and then when I make a mess (which is daily) she's right on it with Shout or whatever to break the stain down. But I'm the only kid on this boat Hope you can find a solution you like.

We're planning on using Brisa on 1 side and Phifertex on the other, based on Brisa's claim of being breathable. Hopefully it won't be too sticky but would like to hear from anyone who has used it.

FWIW,

Waterless hand cleaner will break down the grease borne stains on acrylic fabrics.

We had naugahyde cushions a long time ago, and yes, you can just wipe them off and they'll look clean. But flesh sticks to it in warm weather, so you might want to have washable terry cloth covers for them, that you take home and wash after the weekend's use. Consider them disposable, and replace as needed.
