On some maps you can see that the Mason-Dixon line also has a little
circle around the Miami area.

Re: Best South Florida Home Base?
Being a resident of South Florida, I can say Coconut Grove will be best area to live in. Even I have two homes in South Florida; one is in Tampa and another one in Coconut Grove which I bought through Albanesebuilders.com last year. My family feels very comfortable here, since it is equipped with lots of cafes, restaurants, and parks, shopping centers along with a safe and secure living environment. So I can recommend Coconut Grove area to live happily with family. However, you can look for some other areas too.

Re: Best South Florida Home Base?
I will second Vero Beach, aka Velcro Beach. Quite a few retired cruisers and active cruisers (mostly Bahamas cruisers) live there and property prices are not unreasonable. An active network of C.L.O.D.'s. Not great for day sailing. That's about the only drawback but in east coast FL the only good day sailing spot would, in my opinion, (others might disagree) be Biscayne Bay.

Load up the truck and move to Stuart. It is a laid back area with the small town feel to it. It is very boater friendly, and still has a sailor/fisherman/surfer attitude.

Uh... Yeah. Like letsgetsailing3 said, this thread was dormant for four years, until just this morning. I have a feeling the OP has already made a decision, one way or the other.

Re: Best South Florida Home Base?
I know, I know old thread.
For S ish Florida check out a community called "Country Club Estates" in Venice. They have their own harbor dug in from the intercoastal and would be a great hurricane hole and dockage is rented from the association, but is super cheap. They can only handle a few boats over 35' and you need a high tide for a 6' draft.
My parents have a place their and it's a great place for older boaters 55++ and with a high elevation and secure harbor. All units are trailer but some of the newer ones are nice and at the moment some people are trying to put in new homes on slabs.

Re: Best South Florida Home Base?
I remember a number of years ago staying with my parents friends around west palm beach area in a mobile park called whispering pines. I actually liked the whole mobile park set up. Clean and well kept. Before the crash I knew folks that were looking to unload just to get out of the pad rent for @ $8,000 and the mobile came fully furnished. Seems this wouldn't be a bad alternative and not have sink dollars into a home. Not sure if mobiles are around the nice places suggested or what the current prices are but if the plan would be to spend most time aboard your boat a mobile would be an inexpensive alternative to a house as a land base.

I'm calling the builder today to see if I can have this too....
PS:

I know of a cruiser who was given a double-wide in a park. The owner couldn't get rid of it and the land rental was getting to him. Just take over the land lease.
