Best sailboat for singlehanded sailing?Cat,Tri mono
Im trying to decide what model of boat is best for singlehanded. Mono or Tri or cat. Best for shallow water while singlehanded. Lifting keels might be more work and cost to keep that working?
Cat ketch rig or single mast.
Also Im on the west coast of Florida and where to people go to get away from
the hurricaines while they are cruising.
What size is a good size for living on for one to two people and easy to handle?
Look forward to hearing from people.

Tiki 38.. An all rounder that beats any other cat.. easier maintainance, least draft, cheapest new build and comes as Junk, Sloop or Schooner rig.

Re: Best sailboat for singlehanded sailing?Cat,Tri mono
I have a freedom 39 pilot house, cat-schooner rigged.
It is super simple to single hand. I’m not even good and I can do it pretty easily. All you do is set the two sails up and go. When you tack, you just turn the wheel and the sails flip to the other side.
And extremely lazy boat. No fiddling with lines because of a 1knot wind change. Gusts fluff off the top because the mast kinda bends up there. Just nothing to do except enjoy the view. To the point that “normal” sailors say they don’t know what to do.
The one thing I want is a right angle drill for the winch so I can be super lazy and not even pull the sails up by hand
No rigging to worry about either.

Can't really answer without knowing what your plans are and generally what your budget is like.

A trimaran sure sounds ideal to me for solo. Especially one where the ammas can be removed or retracted as needed to allow for marina access.
I’m in a cat solo and it’s great, BUT, finding places to haul out is pretty much a nightmare. when they hear the beam they double the price

The the Tri with fold in arms can be nice for marina slips.

I have seen these on these on Youtube and seem to be nice for shallow and more.

Re: Best sailboat for singlehanded sailing?Cat,Tri mono
Are you currently a sailor and do you currently singlehand? Single handing isn't terribly difficult on most boats, at least until you get to a certain size. Things that make single handing difficult are usually fixable, like reconfiguring lines and moving winches.
I think instead of looking for the "best" boat to singlehand, look for the best boat for the type of sailing you want to do, then learn to singlehand it.

Re: Best sailboat for singlehanded sailing?Cat,Tri mono
For shallows I would opt for a cat. Many cats can go all the way up to the beach. And can be dried at low tide too.
My next choice would be a boat with a lifting keel. Designs like Southerly and similar.
For one person to live in it, I would opt for 25 to 34 feet LOA. For two people I would like a boat to be 30 feet and longer. There is no upper limit, except your CASH.
A cat may be more expensive to keep in a marina, as they tend beamy.
During a hurricane you simply do not want to be in Florida. And your boat in dry storage probably, high, dry, rigging lowered, and the hull tied down with chains. And keep her far from other boats or things that can topple.

Boatman 61 I didn't think you were allowed to single hand Wharrams? I thought it was mandatory to have at least one topless woman onboard at all times! Preferably two, each keeping a bunk warm in either hull.
Cheers

Re: Best sailboat for singlehanded sailing?Cat,Tri mono
topless is soooooo outdated...full nudity is the requisite foilage required 24/7 to sail a Wharram.
And if one is good...it stands to reason, two is better...
sheesh....do I got to each y'all everything..
