Re: Best America's Cup series EVER!

$30 million? I think you missed a decimal point!

For something completely different, but on topic of outrageous sums, I just read an article stating that the grinders on these boats burned on average 9,000 calories a day when racing! Holy Cow!

Re: Best America's Cup series EVER!

I just found a good article on Reuters writing about the performance improvement by Team Oracle. It also mentions the money spent which is too obscene to write here

Nz gov supported the Nz challenge with 32 milo. Dollars of public money. ( is there another country's. the planet that would do that , well maybe France, but they don't get worked up by round the cans stuff )

Re: Best America's Cup series EVER!

NZ$30 million for advertising the nation's workmanship and tourism worldwide can be compared with the Coca Cola advertising budget of more than NZ$3,000 million. And then there's the 40 odd US PGA golf weekends each with prize purses in the region of NZ$10 million. Probably not a bad deal for NZ industry.

The article says the two teams were not able to face off before the racing began. This is simply not true. I saw both boats on the race course at the same time before the racing began. They were not match racing but then nothing in the rules says the challenger and the defender must match race before the competition begins.

In the rest of the sailing world it is called tuning your boat and learning how to sail it faster.

It sounds like sour grapes that Oracle won.

NZ$30 million is about $7 per Kiwi citizen. The equivalent in Oz, taking into account the larger population, would be $140 million. In the USA, the equivalent would be $2 billion.

Interesting to see the importance a little country like NZ places on this. And it also shows why the best sailors come from there. It is a national passion.

Ooops my mistake....

They are challenging to be another defender and will give Oracle Team AUS some stiff competition for to right to defend the cup

Wonder if Bob Oatley will be able to adjust to "sailing" without having a 150hp diesel going flat out all the time.

Re: Best America's Cup series EVER!

As to the title of this thread "Best America's Cup series EVER!"

I just watch the doco on the 1983 cup series that was posted in the 20 knots thread

I think 1983 AC was perhaps one of the greatest moments in sporting history, right up there with Banister breaking the 4 minute mile

I'm at anchor on a beautifully clear night, but thought I should post this. I think I need a faster boat!
