Bernoulli is the Common Denominator....How Many of You Also Fly?

It seems that the more I sail, the more pilots I meet, and the more I fly, the more sailors I meet. We recently had some calm weather that was no good for sailing, so took to the sky to check one off the bucket list. We were cleared for the low approach to the Space Shuttle Landing Facility, and I highly recommend it if you are ever in the area. So, who else among us partakes? Is it your job, or recreation? Hope you are all well!

Cheers,
Luke

Ditto, except I did it in a 150. Incredibly fun and really rewarding, but one that you have to do all the time to maintain proficiency. Stopping flying to return to school (due to it being an expensive hobby) kinda was the final straw.

PP - ASEL, with a glider rating. It has been more than ten years since the last time I flew, though.

Re: Bernoulli is the Common Denominator....How Many of You Also Fly?

I used to fly and got frustrated with ratio of "hours of fun" as compared to "hours of support time" plus $$$ outlay. Got an instrument rating and flew quite a bit cross country. At some point I may do it again.

You may find that sailing interests often overlap with scuba diving and mountain climbing as well. They all require a certain mindset for dealing with hazard and fear.

Jammer beat me to it... I was also going to through SCUBA in there. I've known a lot of pilots that were SCUBA divers

I'm a rusty instrument rated PP, hadn't flow in many years. Started back again early 2020 before the craziness hit. I stopped not wanting to press my luck in such tight quarters with the CFI and just haven't gotten back to it yet....was nearly there for my vfr rental checkout.

Partly the reason I'm here I guess...daydreaming about other adventures.

Many years back I got heavy into SCUBA, going so far on the recreational side to get me Divecon cert...(assistant instructor/divemaster). And on the tech side IANTD trimix diver and a bunch of other certs. Haven't done any of that in a long time either....

A&P mechanic
Building a Zenith 750 super duty with my son, the plan is for him to learn to fly in his own plane that he built himself, once its finished wife and I plan to build a large catamaran to sail off in once he leaves the house.
Not sure if or where floats for the 750 fall into that picture.

20,xxx something thousand hours of commercial / airline flying. Many of my pilot buddies either sail or will take it up some time in the future.
Having burned unimaginable quantities of fuel over the last 38 years I have to say it feels great to harness wind power...!
Looks cool when my Navionics app is up and hits 400 kts.... ;-)

Multi-engine instrument rated here. Fortunate enough to have owned 2 planes over the years, a Piper Commanche and a Beach Travel Air. Another common thread among sailors/pilots is motorcycles. Any one else guilty?

Yep, been through a Honda Xl350 and a Kawasaki klr650. I know it’s not an extensive nor exotic list, but if fits the bill,

CPL-ASEL-ASES-IR here. First plane I bought was a P210 I bought in the US. I flew it across the Atlantic to Europe and flew it wherever my work took me. Eventually I got bored with the airline style flying and sold it. Got myself a Stearman and had heaps of fun. Then moved to Sweden (partly) and got a share in a 206 on floats. Great times!

Yes, I was just chatting with a pilot friend of mine yesterday about organizing a SCUBA trip. I did my open water certification at 14, which was a few years ago. I think the common theme here is that we like to have fun!
