Not sure, but this photo leads me to believe she will be scrapped

If it were going to be scrapped, why not knock down the masts to get them out of the way?

Re: Beached Schooner on Fire Island

Here's a bit of news from Frank Marcus, the guy who took that amazing sequence of excavation photos in the Dropbox link:

"The boat is now in front of the old Kismet firehouse on the Burma Road outside Kismet.

As you will see in the pictures, they brought a big bulldozer and an excavator (the steam shovel-like vehicle.) The owner made a deal with the people who removed the boat, giving them money -- and the boat. So he was not in Saltaire to see the boat dragged away.

After the boat was gone, I spoke to one of the people who removed the boat. He told me that the bulldozer had been too aggressive in pushing the boat out of the sand which resulted in serious hull damage. Although he will try to sell the boat, it seems unlikely now. I don't know that the decision has been taken, but it seems more likely than not that the boat will be cut up in Kismet and then trucked off in pieces"

(from Saltaire38)

Out of the way of what? Traffic lights? Exit signs? Overhanging elm trees?
Why not get her away from the beach and surf first

If it's damaged now, what's the point of an argument? It's scrap!

Re: Beached Schooner on Fire Island

It's not over till it's over. . . . I maintain a shred of hope still. What looks like bad damage to a bulldozer guy might not look like bad damage to a person with experience building and fixing steel boats. Say it's a two-foot tear in the side, between bulkheads. Could be cut out and plated over. . . . Just guessing of course, but it sure would be nice to see this boat continue a useful life.

At this point it's a matter of will anyone offer more for the hull as a fixer-upper than the new owner could get for the scrap value of the steel (minus the cost of cutting it up and shipping it off-island).

Re: Beached Schooner on Fire Island

What do we think it would take to pry the boat out of the salvage operator's hands? How much has been spent to get it on to Burma Rd. What are the various costs associated with this saga:
Original value of boat prior to hitting beach $75k est???
Fines and penalties levied by govermental entities ______ ??
Paid by owner to salvage operator ______?? + boat title
Scrap Value of boat to salvage operator 53,000lbs @ .02/lb scrap iron = $1.2k
Salvage costs Dozer, excavator 4 men 2 days moblization costs 10k ???
If no salvage, cost to ship to boat yard over size, weight $5k
Cost to get it floating and motorable ___???

I agree with the concept that being a steel boat, it could have survived the salvage operation, as rough as it was.

Re: Beached Schooner on Fire Island

Probably closer to 5k for the equip. (most of which is out of work in this economy). Labor to cut it up and cart it off to the scrap yard way out in Medford is probably not worth the time and effort. If they can figure out how to somehow slide it up on a construction trailer, a boatyard is only a short trip. What penalties could there be? They did nothing to break any laws. I bet the guy who has the equipment will get her over to a boatyard and either fix her up himself or sell her as is. Would be nice to see her survive this unfortunate episode.

Re: Beached Schooner on Fire Island

I just poked around on Google a bit and didn't find any new info.

Someone must know what the ultimate decision was.
