So we are currently in the
Bahamas and would like to make our way down the
eastern Caribbean this spring. We were originally going to
head from the Chesapeake straight to the bvi’s but the
weather windows sucked so much this year that we just said “screw it” and came down to the Bahamas”. Now we want to make our way further south, however, the wife really doesn’t want to go to the
Dominican Republic, every person we’ve spoken to about there has had a bad experience with all the
customs and whatnot. So we have a couple of options;
We could just enjoy the
Bahamas all
winter and then
head back up to the Chesapeake for the summer and go home to
work (we are nurses so we will pick up a
contract or 2 and make some cash). We need to get our
hull scraped and pained and we know it will cost $4-5k more but we figure it will be a wash since we will save about $4k on plane tickets and probably another $3k on
storage compared to storing down in Granada. The down side is that we still have to wait for a
weather window next fall to make it down to the BVI’s
Or, is it possible to make our way south down to the
Turks and Caicos and wait for a cold front to blow through. Then we could use the day or 2 of dead
wind and calm seas before the trades come back to
motor as far straight east as we can get (maybe 150-200 miles) and then use the trades to push us down to
Puerto Rico or even the BVI’s.
