Baboon butt.

It has come to my attention,rather painfully that my backside is aflame. My cat is a wet ride,so there is plenty of briny to pickle ones nether regions. Is there a cure for my affliction,or should i just harden up?

Keeping your backside clean, dry, & aired out are key pointers. To this effect try:
- Baby wipes, & powder. The wipes help to keep clean, & in removing the salt, which attracts moisture. Being hygroscopic & all.
- Sail naked. Goes to the aired out thing. Plus shorts retain both water, & salt. And tend to aggravite things... before & during the baboon butt phase. Wet underwear is one of only 2 things which makes me cranky when sailing. And no, the other ain't lack of sleep.
- Good foulies help. Especially smock tops, or full on drysuits/dry tops. Smock tops being in lieu of, or as your 2nd foulie jacket. And various combinations of these bits of kit can be worn together. Such as a dinghy smock, or drysuit, underneath of a foulie jacket.
- Wear a neck towel, or 2nd choice a scarf, with your foulies. They aid in mimimizing drips down your jacket, & eventually to your backside/boxers.
- Vaseline or similar once you have baboon butt. It aids in keeping tiny debris out of your sores, & thus, clean. And also in keeping you dry/drier. Whether it's just damp on deck, or full on fire-hosing. Though "dry" is relative in the latter.
- Change your shorts often. Be they true shorts, or your boxers/boxer-briefs worn under other garments.
Less salt means less water. And clean means less irritation, less risk of infection, & faster healing.
- Try alternative fabrics such as polypro boxers. As even when wet they're kinder on the backside than is cotton. At least for me. Plus they "dry" a lot quicker, even when super-permeated with salt.
- Wash your clothes 2-4x at each washing in order to better remove the salt.
- Look to improved coamings on your decks.
- Stand watches, literally.
- Let self steering drive, & position yourself to better retain your dryness. Or.
Hire a delivery crew

When I spend all day in a wet swimsuit (which is often the case when we're playing around in harbor), I find that the answer is VASELINE. Or a diaper ointment like Desitin or A&D. Lay it on . . . Much more comfortable.

My checklist after years of long dive trips

If wearing swimmers remove the lining and keep your legs closed if you're in polite company otherwise loose clothing to allow as much air as possible.
Rinse your arse in fresh water whenever possible
As above keep dry and stand as much as possible
Liberally apply sudocreme (nappy rash cream for babies) before and after. Key to the rash is getting good waterproof preventative layer before the rash arrives.

Get a Bean Bag.. toss it from one side to the other when tacking.. keeps the butt up and aired.. dries in no time.

+1 My preferred clothing on the boat all the time.

They are called laplaps here. AKA Sarong, sulu and many other names around the world. There's a good reason why variants are so popular as mens clothing in just about every hot climate.


I find Ungvita ointment to be very effective treatment when I do get a salty crack rash.
(Very prescient choice of name there).

I agree with baby wipes...they make a miserable time much more tolerable. No baboon butt, no shaffed balls. I used to hate being on my boat on days I could not get into the water for a bath. But now it fun again.
