Because they all have you on ignore.

And yes, I made it on sailorboy1 ignore list too. He brags about it being up to 39. If only he knew how many have reciprocated.

One day cat owners will start telling the whole truth. But for the moment it seems most will only praise the cat and won't acknowledge their weakness. It's only when you sit down and have open discussion that you get the truth.

Re: At The Risk of Starting WWlll

We chartered on a catamaran once. It was part of an ASA program so we could learn to sail catamarans.

First thing: they are different. It's worth taking the class!

Secondly, we read all about catamarans and we had a wonderful time on this boat. Everyone had plenty of space, the trampoline was a hoot, we were always comfortable and everyone had privacy. All very nice.

The downside was when we hit higher winds and bigger waves (I was looking up at approaching waves from the helm). Our particular French production condo-cat could only be reefed from the mast. There was no safe way to get to the mast by the time the weather turned bad. Yes, we should have laid jack lines and been better prepared, but it still sucked to be stuck with 25 knot winds and a full main. It sucked a lot, actually, but only for a few hours and we all made it to St. Croix and had a nice time, there.

We found the motion in rough water unpleasant. We found that the boat constantly made little (sometimes not so little) noises from deep inside that sounded like the two hulls were trying to shake loose their bonds and become separate monohulls. We found that pointing anything closer than about 55 degrees was pretty hard without at least one motor.

So, for all the many comforts and advantages, based upon our experience with a production condo-style cat, we prefer production condo-style monohulls.

Then there is the cost factor. We can reasonably aspire one day to own a nice monohull and take care of it. I cannot reasonably foresee affording a 40ft-ish production catamaran.

Not a lot of surprise in this post.

There is a lot of room on production condomarans.

What kind of boat is fun in high wind and big waves?

Is it ever a good idea to not be prepared for bad weather? How many times have we been told reef early?

Lots of boats will pound going to windward. But it is standard to fall off a little in a cat if the boat and motion is uncomfortable. Sometimes the gain in speed will make up for the greater distance.

Going out in a bad weather window unprepared for that weather and beating into the wind is certainly not I would expect from a class that was suppose to teach cat sailing. But then my Dad always taught me the first thing you do before you go out sailing is check the weather window and at the first hint of bad weather reef. And my Dad always had monohulls.

Some boats do make noise, but usually falling off will at least reduce the noise. Condomarans don't point well, but there are plenty of monohulls that don't point well. I am not sure which condomono you think points higher and pounds less than a condomaran, but when comparing cats to monos it does not seem reasonable to compare a condomaran to a heavy weather blue water boat, any more than it is reasonable to compare a Hunter to a Gunboat.

Catamarans as a rule do cost more than monohulls. But that seems to be a matter of supply and demand.

I have to wonder if you had had fair winds and following seas (not an impossibility if you wait for the right weather window) what your opinion of condomarans would be.

.
Reef early.
A LOT of boats only reef from the mast.
You HAVE to reef if you left it too late..... so prepare.
