With the number of
electronics on a vessel today I usually keep the
engine ticking over to keep
batteries topped up. Also helps to provide the added punch to get through waves so I use my engine regularly when sailing long passages.
However, I do not subscribe to the view that we lose our sailing skills. Recently when anchored with high winds and
current and no engine I managed to sail off the
anchor single handed. Skills once learned are always there when you need them.
After not reducing a sight for many years I got out my
sextant and obtained a fix. Compared favourably with my
GPS reading.
