Re: Are You Scared of Wood ?

Having owned two wooden boats, I can say I luv them! BUT, I don't have the age, ambition or the $$$,$$$ to own what I would like anymore. Otherwise I'd be up there working with Charlie Cobra and maintaining my own.
Man was meant to live and thrive inside wood structures, although some woods are toxic, in dust form (sanding), to humans.

So, I've resorted to plastic for the space, and storability on the hard. If I were <40 w/a pocket full of $$$ these days, it wood be wood.

Interesting peace ...

some people think that we have engineered ourselves into the space we are in.

Then again-I still happily smoke-everything-so what do I know.

We have all teak below to protect us in our living area But then how many have drank Boone's Farm wine as a kid. I heard they had formaldehyde in them. Strawberry Hill was a great flavor for teens just off koolaide! Well, I heard it was an issue-of course I never tried it. And I suppose Woodie never inhaled!

Re: Are You Scared of Wood ?

I love wood boats, have owned several, and they are alive and feel good. There is lots of wood on my latest love. I don't have the time required to be a good wooden boat owner and they do require a labor of love.

Re: Are You Scared of Wood ?

Once upon a time in the days of wooden boats there was a kauri strip planked vessel.

To paraphrase Groucho Marx-- I would never be a member of a club which wouldn't accept my wooden boat.

I'm a believer! I look at the deep color & shine on the side of the boat and am amazed. She is a thing of beauty. I am happy someone is caring to make her look like that.

Hey CharlieCobra:

I have been looking at the designs from www.jonquedeplaisance.net as they are cold moulded wood designs. I too a drawn to a wooden boat, junks actually. (If I could I would retire and sail the world on a "wooden retirement home with a junk rig.")

What are some caveats with cold moulded construction?

Thanks,

Fernao

Re: Are You Scared of Wood ?

It depends on the technique and woods used. Cold moulding is pretty good stuff. Expensive to do but worth it. We were considering cold moulding that K-40 in the pics above but she didn't need it.
