Are Power Boaters Clueless

I'm still trying to understand cruisers complaining about wakes from power boats.

Here we have maybe a mile and a half to the bay.

Lately we have had Northerly Winds which mean 2-3 foot waves on a normal day and larger on days when the winds are 20 knots or so especially when from the NE then we get the 4 plus foot waves right at the entrance to Little Creek.

I'm not even cruising yet but I'm happy once inside ..............a wake from some power boat isn't even a noticeable type thing after crossing the bay on a day when the wind is up. My part of the bay is where it meets the Atlantic Ocean so it can kick up quite fast

It must be that many cruisers today are in the ICW most of the time and not used to much wave action....

The wake is particularly annoying while sitting at a nice anchorage, and out of nowhere the boat gets tossed around, you stick your head up and some jerk is going by 50 yards away rolling a big wake, this in a bay that is two miles wide, and everybody is anchored on one side, in the anchorage.

Wind driven waves are a fact of life, you move if you can to decrease fetch, but a wake is something that was avoidable.

Not long ago I anchored in a relatively large anchorage. Room for fifteen or more boats. I was the first one there.

After an hour or so, a powerboat came in and anchored a couple hundred feet away from me. Closer than I thought he should have given the size of the anchorage.

Then, a sailboat came in and anchored directly between us!

In my opinion, he was clueless. Some boaters are clueless. It doesn't matter what sort of boat they have.

Perhaps sailors are jealous of power boaters because their sailboats don't make large wakes.

I guess it's just relative to where you are.

The bay here is 15-30 miles wide with ocean waves and ships passing in the main channels

You get waves from them while anchored over night if not behind a break water like the cement ships at Kiptopeke and even then some times you'll get big waves

If I get to many I'll usually tie a second line to my anchor rode and swing the bow around into the general direction of the waves or wakes and it's much better sleeping than beam too where you sometimes have to hold yourself in your bunk/berth. Almost fell overboard one night making an adjustment being half asleep and on a wet deck dressed only in boxer shorts ......

Then you have the tide change every 6 hours where you may have to make an adjustment since it runs so hard here at times

He might putt by and wave at you? I can't see painting all power boaters with a broad brush. My guess would be spoiled brats are probably the problem?

Anchored most of the day in Effingham Bay in Barkley Sound, B.C. Canada .
It was late evening, and with only one other small sailboat in this big anchorage, a giant "Gin Palace" came in and dropped anchor right in our face less than 75 feet straight in front of us.
They then proceeded to turn on a generator with a 4" diameter exhaust pipe.
Of course, the light breeze was blowing directly on us.

I have never been more motivated to stuff something up someone else's exhaust pipe as I was right then.
I went over with the dinghy to politely ask them to reanchor and they told me to pound sand, but not in such polite terms.

Oh for some old sweatshirts and a big broomstick !!

Boaters spend thousands of dollars for generators. You don't believe they should make use of the investment? One has to grin and bear it (or move anchorage) but hope the generation isn't constant. Same can be said for noisy windmills.

From one who doesn't have a generator or windmill.
