Re: Are Power Boaters Clueless
As a current power-boater, I get seriously rocked by wakes from power boats, both commercial, government, and private ... more than I recall when on sailboats in previous decades. Boat wakes are part of the environment, and one must be continuously aware; Yeah, there is always the occasional ++++++ that makes life challenging for no good reason.

Re: Are Power Boaters Clueless
Coming into a narrow channel the over day fighting the current and wind drift with the fishing power boater heading toward me making a huge wake I wondered "Will he slow down as he passes me as he can see the wake he is making?". Never fear he didn't, but looked over at me after he passed to see how he did and waved nicely (I was also waving, but differently).
Sitting here outside No Name Harbor anchored in a group of 5 boats for 2 days you don't need a clock to know it's nearly sunrise. Because that is the time the power boats blast by at full speed to toss you out of bed because
"Hey the fish are waiting for us".
So are they clueless? I just don't think so as much as I think they are a different adjective.

sailorboy
i have a speedboat and a yacht ,
if im going out and passing moored or anchored boats you would want me to fly by as my boat makes 20mm wake at 60Kn but at 8Kn it will trow a massive 1 meter wake ,,
I had a guy yell at me so i appoligysed and said i will slow to 4 Kn next time ,,,,
Funny he waved me down and asked if i could go fast again ,,,,
I got sort of friendly with the guy as my contessa 32 is mored 4 boats passed his ,,
Its a time noise thing he was saying ,,
do you want to hear a V8 at full song with no Wake or have a massive wake and no noise ?

Re: Are Power Boaters Clueless
How about idle speed and a tiny wake until you clear the area?
Some big boats even go in and out of gear to keep their speed down until they clear our canals.

I dont know the water in your area but here it would take you 2 hours , its deep and wide It has always been a fishing vilage and the moored boats come after the fishing trawlers ,
The area has always been a wate ski area and there is a ski park about 700 metres away , now 99% of the boats stay away from the moored boats ,, there is always one ,,,,
and the old saying ,,,,,
YOU CANT PLEASE EVERYONE ALL THE TIME ,

Re: Are Power Boaters Clueless
Most of them can barely get the thing out of the slip without help. You really think they have a clue what their wakes are doing?
Never attribute any act to malice that can be explained better by stupidity and ignorance.

Now I’ve almost heard everything

Looked at where your anchored and look at the chart, your anchored of a major channel between Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Duh?
But hey it’s Friday, check in with CF on Monday and let us know how it was during the weekend![emoji38]
On edit it’s spring break weekend and the wind appears to be turning to the west, pick up a mooring at Dinner Key and enjoy Coconut Grove for the weekend[emoji1303]

Re: Are Power Boaters Clueless
Just today powerboat waked me from 3ft away. I am anchored to the side, river is 300ft wide.
If they were decent humans they would use sail and oar.
I don't say they are clueless; I say they are cheaters.

Re: Are Power Boaters Clueless
the only way i could do it would be to start and stop the motor ever 4 or 5 seconds but then it would get complaints about constant starting ,,,,
As i said i stay away from moored boats exept one guy that anchored in the ski park ,,, not much can do about that ,,
I do believe that most sailers hate power and power hate sail ,,,
But there are a few of us that ski and sail ,,
We are hated by everyone ,,,,
But who cares i dont im having fun ,,,,
Just been for a ski water is perfect 24.4c sunny
