Oh yeah.

It just stikes me as very odd how so many seem to try and escape their fast paced, high stress lives and move over to the low stress, easy going, no worries likestyle of cruising.

BUT... they bring their anger baggage along with them.

Dude...

Five summers on the boat now, and not a single piece of Wedgwood China has broken.

Let go of your anger.

Re: Are Power Boaters Clueless

I was going through enterprise channel and had a 60' powerboat tail me at 60 foot behind me, honking at me, before squeezing past maybe 30 feet away, throwing a big wake.

Like dude, would it have killed you to wait 10 minutes until we were out of the channel?

Most of the time I don't really have an issue. I'm sure there are just as many dumb sailboaters as powerboaters, but they go 4x slower and don't throw out a wake so I notice them a lot less.

Sorry, I am not biting. I have gybed - both accidentally myself and forced by waves - more than I care to remember. If something get's 'scrambled' below, it is my own fault for putting out without securing gear.
Safe passages and fair winds to all.

Re: Are Power Boaters Clueless

We are anchored in Cape May today after running inside south from Manasquan. We have been violently waked by sport fishers every day for the last week even at anchor. They even wave at you as they go by.

We have changed our anchoring tactics ....
As shown in the photo below we are anchored well south of the USCG station and a little south of the Corinthian Yacht Club...... in about 2' of water at low tide in a very soft bottom (we draw 3'). Even the whale watcher tour boats can't rock us when we are sitting in over a foot of mud. We simply get under way when the tide is rising.

Come on people. There are A-holes that have power boats and sail boats. My guess would be more on the power boat side. Not yachtsmen just go fast yahoos. A product of todays society?

Who cares, forget about it. Just enjoy every day on the water.

Re: Are Power Boaters Clueless

I got into sailing cause I wanted to get away from all the idiots .. Only to find out the sea is also plagued with them. And they come in all colours, nationalities and choice of watercraft I am sorry to say..

The powerboater whose life depended on getting in before me at that narrow harbour entrance so he just had to hit the throttle balls to the wall to make it and cut in front of me..

That sailing couple obliviously enjoying their downwind sail straight into me as I frantically issued a SECURITE on ch. 16 warning all vessels to avoid me cause my boom had just fallen off and we couldn't maneuver easily in force 5 winds.. Even after I called them by name asking them to please alter their course a few degrees to avoid us.. No answer .. Nothing was going to deter these folks from enjoying their downwind sailing..

The myriad of thoughtless skippers that leave their halyards banging against the mast all night...

Those fishermen chatting on ch. 16 like it is a private telephone call asking how the family is doing...

There is just no escape .. The idiots are everywhere. Sorry

I just had a lovely dinner with two very nice Italian gentlemen on the powerboat next door. They have a new friend and I gained two along with a new recipe.

I never had a problem rafting with power or sail. There are inconsiderate people all over. On the water you may find fewer?

My personal expectations are the same, but also includes sailboats. Sailboaters too aren't infrequently inattentive or unskilled with luffing sails and erratic, unnecessary course changes, etc. (I'm a former sailboater and racer.)

Fortunately, most boaters most of the time are courteous.

Wakes from ships, ferries, tugboats, and power boats are part of the natural environment. I often make turns and slow down to minimize the effect of others' wakes.

My six-knot motor boat makes a minimal wake.

I've been known to follow a ship that acts as my blocker when transiting a sailboat race.

:-) I was kidding.

But there was a power boater many years ago that really got my ire up. He came roaring into the 5mph zone in the channel with a 4' wake that rolled right over my catamaran. When I complained he said "if you don't know how to sail, stay off the lake."

Well, somebody took a shining on me- not sure if God or Devil, but a big breeze suddenly came up. I was able to keep up with him all the way to the marina. And then I proceeded to tack back and forth cutting between him and his dock, hull flying, mast over his transom. Again and again. Of course, I did tell him that if he can't dock a boat he should stay off my bay.

Ah, the stories of youth.

Sailboat (with poorly-trimmed mainsail) showing disdain toward power boats?:
