Re: Apparently sea shanties are a trending thing.

While I was in Middle School, one of the teachers had this brilliant idea that we should perform a group class sing-a-long...
We all assembled on the school stage at some or other event, and with baton raised, we proceeded to do....nothing....

2/3 'rds of us could not remember the words, the other 1/3 didn't give a damn...

It was an unmitigated disaster of epic proportions. The hall was filled with parents, other school kids and other dignitaries...the teacher....with baton in hand.....was furious beyond description...we all got into a heap of trouble afterwards, but that was the end of our group sing-a-longs.....so there was that...

Interestingly they mention video games. I've played Assassins Creed Valhalla, and AC Odessy. Both feature a lot of accurate historical notes, geographical highlights, and sailing period vessels. If you pick an all-female crew for your Trireme (who wouldn't) they will sing in greek a variety of shanties, the Norse sing in English on your longship.

Yes, this.
The Great Big Sea

I wait until we're out far enough that even the best swimmers won't chance a swim to shore.
Then after a few rounds of Honey Jack out comes The Great Big Sea
usually starting with
Old Polina .

Re: Apparently sea shanties are a trending thing.

This thread made me shamefully aware that I have no sea shanties in my guitar repertoire, which incidentally is too fancy a word to describe the short list of songs I can actually muddle through sometimes. So, I am now learning "What do you do with a drunken sailor?"

All the lyrics make sense to me, except "Put him in the scupper with a hose-pipe on him."
A punishment akin to waterboarding? Just washing the puke off him?
