Re: Anyone seen the movie Abandoned on Netflix?

It's not available on Canadian Netflix either, under either title.

Re: Anyone seen the movie Abandoned on Netflix?

I'll be watching the movie shortly, so I am not sure whether to recommend the movie. I will solidly recommend the book Steve Callahan wrote about this event. Steve himself spent 76 days drifting in an inflatable life raft. I suspect it made him a good listener the the crew in telling their story. It's well worth the read.

Re: Anyone seen the movie Abandoned on Netflix?

Back in '89, the electronics were very limited, and many boats still of plywood construction. Most true, serious, sailors, SMEETON'S, ROTH, HISCOCK, PARDEY's used very basic setups and the KISS principle, many sailed wooden boats around the world back then and most did just fine. We still prefer and practice the KISS method on very basic and traditional craft even though we have limited electronics on board.

We were sailing during '89 but do not recall this incident being in the news or in mags, although I'm sure it was.

All in all pretty good viewing last night. Red Box Rental.

Actually, few years ago I read the book "Capsized" which Steve Callahan co-authored with James Nalepka, one of the survivors, which describes Nalepka's version of the events.
(the book written by the skipper John Glennie is called "The Spirit of Rose Noelle")

I chose Capsized over the other simply because having read Callahan's Adrift before. Just saw the movie on Netlflix few weeks ago.

The movie is a bit amateurishly done on low budget but still ok to watch and relatively accurate.

Curious to hear if somebody read both versions and if there is a major difference in the describing the interpersonal dynamics atmosphere on the boat.

Re: Anyone seen the movie Abandoned on Netflix?

Now available on Netflix Canada.
Despite some gaffes, apparently similar to the real (1989) event.
I recommend it, notwithstanding some comments above.
