Any ports of entry in the eastern islands of Fiji?
Is there anywhere to check in to Fiji in the eastern islands? I'd like to spend most of my time in the eastern islands, and it seems like you have to go all the way to main islands to check in then go all the way back east against the prevailing winds.

I think Savusavu is the furthest east. I think they have introduced pre arrival requirements. Maybe check Noonsite for latest info.

Application for cruising permit shall either be submitted through an agent, or made personally at theiTaukei offices in Lautoka or Suva yourself.
All yachts and small crafts arriving into Fiji from overseas must first report to a Customs Port of Entry. The Ports of Entry, through which you must arrive, are located in Port Denarau Marina, Lautoka, Vuda Marina (by advance appointment only), Suva, Savusavu, Levuka and Rotuma.

There are five ports of entry in Fiji, namely: Suva, Lautoka, Levuka, Wairiki, and Malau. Other ports and deep-water anchorages frequently used are at Savusavu and Vuda Point. All customs, immigration and quarantine facilities are available in the above ports of entry.

Under Customs law here in Fiji, it is a requirement that the Master of the vessel gives a minimum of 48 hours notification to Customs prior to arrival in Fiji. It is also necessary to provide this same 48 hour notice period to Ports Authority, Department of Immigration, Health and Biosecurity.

The Island Cruising Pacific Rally organises a special clearance at the Lau Group each season. Otherwise Savusavu is your best option and then wait for a window to head south from there.

Here's a link to a graphic link to the ports Gord made: https://www.scribblemaps.com/maps/vi...Fiji/FijiPorts
Do note that you have to apply in Suva for the Lau permit if you want to explore freely in the group of islands.

Yes. Unless you join the rally mentioned above. While it would get you there, it might limit you also.

Important info, thank you!
Would be nice to go from Savusavu instead, but it is what it is.
Some of the places in the eastern group look absolutely incredible and would like to be far from intense tourism, so would prefer not to be time or location limited.

Imho, if you do it all on your own, and especially, arrive before the rally, you should have a marvelous time, with little extraneous interruption.

You can definitely check into Savusavu and then head east to the Lau group. We did this last year stopping at many beautiful island on the way to Fulaga.

Great, thank you for the first hand knowledge. That didn't sound quite right to me.

It is true: things administrative do change, and I'm glad to hear that access to the Lau has become easier. During the three seasons that we cruised there the Lau was completely off limits to cruisers... apparently due to some drug smuggling that had gone on in previous years. We were very sad to have missed out on those islands.
