Annapolis to Bermuda Race Starts at 1100 Today

The race got delayed a day due to weather.

It will start at 1100 today.

Looks like light winds from the North at the start.

Looks like there is an old Tartan 34C in the race.

It is also the smallest boat.

A 1972.

Re: Annapolis to Bermuda Race Starts at 1100 Today

Navy 44 MK II Tenacious won on PHRF in 2018 with an XP-44 arriving first overall.

The first three spots were won by Navy 44's on PHRF.

I was lucky enough to see Tenacious and Sly the XP-44 battling it out near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay just North of Cape Charles. They were very close at the time but the XP 44 had position on the windward side of the bay with Tenacious just ahead but needing to tack to get more west

As they were battling it out other sails started to appear to the N.orth

Re: Annapolis to Bermuda Race Starts at 1100 Today

Okay, so they have finally started the race at 1330 or so and are making their run down the bay.

Should be interesting if the wind stays light all the way down.

Once the wind gets up, the fast boats will be totally separating themselves from the slow ones. (boat for boat I mean)

Tracking updating is maybe every hour or half hour. Not sure yet .......

These guys aren't beginners......but if those Northerly winds stay up the Gulf Stream could be a tough crossing for some.

Race Update: Due to forecasts for Potential Tropical Cyclone One & for the safety of competing yachts & their crew, the Race Committee has made the decision to delay the start of the 2022 Mustang Survival Annapolis to Bermuda Ocean Race to Saturday, June 4.

The old Tartan 34C is basically in the middle of the pack right now. (boat for boat)

That is quite an achievement for that crew with all those other faster boats.

The Tartan 34C is the slowest boat in that fleet.

The light wind downwind start though is a big plus to a slow boat like the Tartan 34C which in no way can point with the others

Re: Annapolis to Bermuda Race Starts at 1100 Today

The wind is starting to switch to the East and it appears the experienced crews are trying to get over toward the Eastern side of the bay as fast as possible which could give a few of the slower boats at least an early advantage especially when it goes light later tonight

Thanks for sharing OP.
Any idea what the budget might be to enter the race?

No idea but you can probably research it.

Remember though there are all the other safety and most likely experience requirements etc.

Re: Annapolis to Bermuda Race Starts at 1100 Today

I know something about Marion to Bermuda and Newport to Bermuda and marblehead to Halifax budgets.
Only something. Not a lot.
One part is the cost to acquire or maintain the required safety equipment. Life raft, storm sails if needed, SOLAS flares, installed manual pumps, spares as required, etc. These items are detailed in the relevant race document, available on the inter webs.
The other part depends on you and your crew. Lodging at the destination or sleep aboard? Crew fly back or sail back? Who pays?
Separate delivery sails for the return trip that are shipped to the destination?
Provisioning for the return trip?
Delivery crew back or your friends?
There are many levels of race program and crew. Some expect the crew to share in all the out and back logistics and expense. Others expect the owner to pick up the bill for everything including personal equipment and crew uniforms.
Wild variation in costs there.
The safety equipment and boat prep costs are definitely on the owner and for a well found offshore boat are relatively low. Except if you want to upgrade to a race prep bottom job and new sails. Etc. Because the boat is likely 90% ready to go.
The destination costs? From a few hundred dollars per person to 10k plus. Depends on the program and expectation. That’s a guess.

Re: Annapolis to Bermuda Race Starts at 1100 Today

It's amazing how those Navy 44's can sail along with a Pogo 50 and the other new designs..

At this moment actually being just ahead.....boat for boat.

The Navy 44 has to be rated a lot slower.

The Navy 44's are 2-3 times heavier than the newer designs also from what I can find on sailboatData.com also......with a LWL of 10'-12' shorter than a Pogo 50
