Anegada Approach

Ahoy Mateys, heading back to the BVI this January - will be our first trip to Anegada (coming from BEYC). Last year we heard that buoys were missing on the approach, and to be ready for a challenge... We bareboat every year (trip #7) on 48' cat and love it... we draw 3 1/2 ft.
Any tips or updates on Anegada approach to settling point would be genuinely appreciated. I use a GARMIN 76cx.

PS: I purchased the chart from BVIPirate.com and it has what seems to be current waypoints and a charted approach. Am I good to go?

Hi Cap'n Jeff ... we found the bouys are just fine and were there a few weeks ago. They are far apart so one needs to make sure to find the lowest bouy ... I usually have a start position at 18*42'.766N 064*23'.763W. Hope this helps

We went there this past April drawing six and a half feet. No problem, plenty of channel markers. Were using the chart that came with the boat, Don Street's maybe? Anyway, all very clear and simple. Saw a whale on the way back. I think Anegada is the most interesting of the BVI. Go for a long walk and look at the flora.

... Ok ... just in case here are the track positions I use ... you have the first above ...
We use Raymarine

2nd position = 18*43'.011N 064*23'.238w
3rd position = 18*43'.082N 064*23'.051W
4th position = 18*43'.265N 064*23'.087W

From here you can drop down through the mooring field ... we usually anchor just behind it at any position that visually looks good ... last time we hung at 18*43'.421N 064*23'.223W

Its good we all have different tastes ... Anegada certainly is at the bottom of the charts for me in the BVI's although diving at Loblolly Bay and Cow wreck are great

We rate Anegada near the top of our BVI picks! Spend at least two nights, rent a car and drive to the island - don't miss Loblolly, Cow Wreck, the flamingos, lobster at Whistling Pines and Painkillers at Potters. Enjoy, just use your good navigation skills.

Bvi Pirate/Walker is the "authority" on most things involving Anegada. His charts are very accurate. Have fun on your trip and feel free to drop off any excess Snap-On products for me!!!

I agree with rubikoop and the previous posters - Walker Mangum's charts and approaches are the "bee's knees". These days, during season, there is a veritable highway of boats heading betwen the North Sound and Anegeda so you could always follow a boat that looks like the might know what they are doing into the channel with sufficient distance between you so that you can stop and use your GPS track to get back in case things go wrong.

I always head up to Anegada but with my new boat and deep keel I'll stay on the safe side and anchor on the outside close to the first buoy.

Whatever you do, don't follow the chartplotter into the channel; all of the Navionics charts for the BVI are very accurate with the single exception of Anegada; following the chartplotter will let you visit the "two sisters" closer than you might like.

For anyone who is interested, I used ge2kap to create a .kap file of the anchorage at Anegada, with the markers shown according to the bvipirate website.
