Allen Payne aka Jim
Sad news from Astoria Oregon. Jim Payne ,age 79, sailor and boatwright, known to everyone who frequented the Port of Astoria has capsized and drowned off of the Oregon coast. He was my good friend and we were going to meet at Winchester Bay on this trip. This is a mystery because he worked in boat yards most of his adult life.
He knew just about everything about sailing and boats. He had just completed a total refit of his 42 foot sloop. He and his wife Shirley age 76 were both lost. Details are on Facebook

So sorry about your friends!
The Forum currently has two threads about this sad tale. Here's the first and longest:

Re: Allen Payne aka Jim
In tribute to your friends - and every sailor among us:
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have cross’d the bar
- Alfred Lord Tennyson

Re: Allen Payne aka Jim
Jim and I are a few months apart in age. Maybe I'm getting too old for this.

Re: Allen Payne aka Jim
I can't believe Jim would go out in bad weather if he knew about it. Something completely unexpected happened here(maybe multiple things). Jim was meticulous about all his work. The bowsprit he put into my boat was excellent. I feel certain he rebuilt his own the same way.

Re: Allen Payne aka Jim
I'll bet that boat was pretty much all there was for their kids to inherit. I read that some one broke it into pieces on the beach.
