They might be a generation or two down in the electronics package, but I think that is wasted money to upgrade that anyway. Learn to use a chart.

I think it's an error to buy an older boat from the 60,70,80. While depreciated out for the most part IMHO newer designs are better from a functional standpoint (cockpit, galley, etc.) and sail better. They are modular designs, Penta engine/sail drive systems for example, that lend themselves to functional, economical, manufacturing and maintenance.

The idea that you will buy a 2006 boat and then spontaneously blow up the auxiliary is simply ridiculous. . Do the diligence, buy a good boat, and take off.

I agree , the sweet spot of 2000-2008 with no deferred maintenance ( of if so then an appropriate selling discount ) buy a stock AWB that loads of people like and wavy and you’ll get a nice sailing machine , a comfortable home and good resale ability. Loads of maintenance expertise around common yacht centres

Boats like these will take the competent anywhere they want to go.

At 6'4" tall, even more important than headroom, is adequate bunk length. Good luck in the search.

Also, there are some people who live aboard in Adelaide, so I'm thinking you didn't approach the right marina people...because I don't think the people I know who are living aboard there would be happy doing so if it were against the law.

CF really isn't the place for it, but you should really consider where you want to spend your retirement years, too, because PR status in Oz could really open up your options.

Our boat owes us nothing in year 5 compared to renting similar accommodation.
If renting, .we would already be down $200k in the previous 5 years rent and next year we'd be another $40,000 down and the next year, more again
.
I agree with your entire post. And think the beneteau idea is perfect for op. I was going to do itl ol
And reading op's response they seem to do a lot of research i think theyre going to manage fine

Exactly what I was thinking Boatman. I don't even really understand the money issue. If one of them is a Geo then they should be on 150k a year. The two mining Geo's I know are on 200k a year. That's why I thought the 18k Duncanson is a cheap introduction.

Cheers
