Adrift - the movie

I watched Adrift last night on Netflix. Found it well done and entertaining with a pretty girl and some good drama. Apparently a true story.

Not sure what year the actual story happened, but it seemed to me the whole story would have been resolved easily if the boat had one satellite phone on board, something like the Garmin Inreach SE.

Are these not commonly carried on boats? Would anyone do an ocean crossing without one these days?

It was a story from the 1980s...probably sat phones were not so common then?

They did a ton of things wrong but that could just be the movie (probably is).
