Re: A use for all those ships logs...
Cool!. I find these types of data presentation fascinating. While not sailing related, here is an identical concept for the modern world - Facebook connections:

It's really interesting to note some of the similarities between sailing trade 100-200 years ago and connections on Facebook in the modern era.

Re: A use for all those ships logs...
Incredibly cool. It would interesting to see what one could do with all the digital navigational data available these days.

Re: A use for all those ships logs...
How wonderful it would be to overlay modern shipping tracks?
Interesting to notice some waypoints ... Two in the southern ocean, one looks like near kerguelen islands south east of south Africa.
also love to overlay cruisers routes.

Re: A use for all those ships logs...
Possibly the coolest map I've ever seen. It ought to be in Cornell's book, "World Cruising Routs"

It is interesting that he thinks the doldrums are an hurricane area. That is a new one on me.______Grant.

Re: A use for all those ships logs...
What surprises me, is the lack of presence along the European route south to the canaries and then across. I thought that was the traditional route to the Americas. But obviously not , anyone comment on that ?

That is strange.
I'm just looking at a chart of the recommended sailing ship routes from Ocean Passages, and the west bound route is southern route passing the Canary Islands.
The direct west bound route is labeled "Seldom Possible"
There is an alternative autumn route which follows the GC line.

Re: A use for all those ships logs...
Obviously the map is based on the ships' logs that they had access to. Maybe they lacked logs from certain companies or countries? I would that that thing like naval logs would be available, but what about commercial shipping companies? Also when those companies close or go bust or get taken over, what happens to old logs?

I can understand the voids in Africa and South America caused by deserts and jungles, but where is China and Russia?

Re: A use for all those ships logs...
For UK commercial ships, the deck log books are kept by the company for a number of years.
The only log book which was delivered to a government dept was the Official Log Book, which did not contain details of the daily working of the ship. These logs are kept by the Registry of Ships and Seaman at Cardiff.

Re: A use for all those ships logs...
On US flagged vessels, we are required to keep them aboard for five years, then they go to the office. Don' know what they do with them after that.

I've been playing a little to see if we can get data out of Yotreps and Winlink to look at cruising yachts in the same manner. I expect a lot more fair-weather routes, but who knows.

Re: A use for all those ships logs...
My guess is the data points are skewed because of they are providing OUTBOUND tracks only, not INBOUND (using US as reference.)
Just a guess.
