A rave for Rocker Stoppers

We own several boats….one is a Hunter 23.5 trailerable sailboat.

Boat is tender, due to the water ballast.

So we invested in 4 Davis Rocker Stoppers.

At first, they did not seem to work well. But when I (drastically) increased the weight of the bottom weight, bingo.

These 4 simple plastic stoppers make a HUGE difference in our anchoring out life. We rig them at the end of the boom, and then swing it way out. It feels like we are on a 40 foot sailboat when deployed.

I have seen and talked to others using them, and have noticed many don’t have a large weight at the bottom (have even seen some being used with NO weight). The weight is critical. We use a large sandstone rock I picked off a beach, wrapped with line, and with a quick-release caribeener to simply clip it on. Free weight, and works great.

I would urge others to try these….with a large weight! We sleep like babies at night now.

Used them on a smaller boat we had...4 per side plus weights (careful they crack).

Now have two magma versions - out on the spinnaker pole and boom - win!

Magma no longer makes their product, so that’s was not an option. And so many moving parts. Clickety-clank….

I did own one of those types way back (not a Magma but a competitor’s brand), and a bunch of the vanes fell off when we were at Dry Tortugas National Park. I had to dive down about 30 feet to retrieve them, with dozens of some type of bottom cruising sharks everywhere. Vanes were gone….the little stainless pins that stuck out were broken off…..threw it away….

And there is no way I am going to pay $2000 for two of the newer designed articulating ones….not worth that much….

Too bad they no longer make them - magmas are silent, and much more effective than the stationary type…
