2 Stroke starting after the winter

I made mistake of not running the carb. dry so after a long winter of course it wont start.

Please give me a fools guide to starting, what things to do in what order, short of taking the carb. apart and in the hope there might be some tricks to avoid doing so.

I will try some new fuel tomorrow - I know the fuel is about 5 months old as well!

You may get lucky with new fuel sitting in the carb dissolving the gum, then drain the carburetor.
But I'd pull it and soak it in carb cleaner for awhile and re-assemble, cause even if you get it running, it may be partially clogged and run lean, lean is hot and hot isn't good.

Unfortunately, taking the carburetor apart and cleaning thoroughly is the only thing that comes to mind. In the future, make sure to add some gas stabilizer to your tank and then run the carb dry.
