2 Month Stay as Close as Possible to NY/NJ

I have a boat up by NYC. Its winter slip will be done April first.

I am cruising with the boat all summer so I don't want to pay for an entire slip for the whole summer. I also can't justify some of the transient rates around the city. I'm not at all familiar with NJ marinas but would like to know more.

Can anyone suggest low cost places I can store this boat from April to June?

Since I have to move it in April, the closer to NYC the better. But I'm willing to move it a couple days away, especially if we are talking about moving it down Long Island Sound.

Looking for low low prices on a slip, mooring or even storage on the hard. Doesn't matter. We aren't staying on the boat at all during this time.

50' LOA
14' Beam (I think)
5'5" draft
Cutter/Sloop style rig

What is low, low? Gotta think it's going to be $800 + for a boat that size. I keep my cat on a mud flat in New Rochelle behind a friends house when up there. Could probably anchor between City Island and New Rochelle all summer if you were polite and had a nice looking boat.

Yup. We clean up well and the boat, while not a new design, is presentable and currently at a marina in the area.

Unfortunately I'm not sure I'd be comfortable leaving the boat at anchor for 2 months. Mostly due to crime, rather than the anchor's holding ability. (Large Manson Supreme)

You mentioned you don’t mind going down L.I. Sound. The cheapest place to stay for a couple months might be the Yankee Boatyard in Portland Ct. on the Ct. river. Good safe spot.

I would call and find out the long term rate for moorings in Manhasset on LI. The transient day rate is pretty much the cheapest you’ll find on the Sound so I’m thinking the long term rate, if they offer it, would be good.

It’s a large and busy mooring field. I would not be concerned about security there.

And Manhasset is easy to get to from the city.

Thank you, I sent them an email. Didn't know about that place.

Great point. You're talking about the municipal moorings, right?

Definitely another great option. Very attractive when moving a boat in April that's currently in NY harbor. Brr

You might try Gateway Marina, short bus transfer from the city subway lines, just west across the road from Floyd Bennett Field. Or a fast cab ride from JFK. It can be a PITA to get all the way in there, since there's a lot of shoal water, but they generally are cheap.

I don't think putting your boat on the hard in April will be a welcome idea. The yards will be mainly still full from the winter and trying to EMPTY the storage areas, busy launching. So a new boat coming it, will often just be an obstruction that needs to get moved back into the water. Not worth the price of hauling if you don't need it.

Try Port Washington Water Taxi:
https://www.portwatertaxi.com/mooring-services
The full season mooring rate is $1500, including tender service. Their nominal open date is April 15, but you could ask.

If you are willing to head to the NJ side of NYC try the Perth Amboy Harborside Marina; https://goo.gl/maps/11RxihKZBnM2. They have some reasonably priced moorings and there is a free water taxi to the mooring field provided by the yacht club next door. I used them several years ago. Nice people.

Try Echo Bay in New Rochelle. Have you considered up the Hudson?

I will check all these leads. Thank you.

Most places don't have their prices yet. I'm waiting on them.

Google city island marinas and give them a call. There have been a lot of consolidation over the past few years..... great place.

Good luck
