Through Panama Canal

Hello everyone,
My name is Julian and I am partner of my boat Tropicbird, she found me and we have been together for two years now.
I am planning to sail from Portobelo Panama to Thailand.
i have all the local knowledge of how to transit the canal at the best price, where to stay before transiting and who to use for the documentation.
I have been in the area for the last two years so have local knowledge.
In return for my information i am in need of support. i am not short on experience indeed my mother was pregnant with me whilst in a regatta so i say I was sailing before i was born. i have sailed many miles and have sailed my boat 3 times 6 day passages. however across the pacific is a loooooooooooooooog way.
So perhaps anyone with similar situation can share info and thoughts prior to what will be a great adventure. If I can return the favor then i am ore than willing to do so. You may contact me on

Re: Through Panama Canal

Hi Julian,

1) take enough water (and optionally: food) for the passage,
2) the first 1k miles or so will be light,
3) do not miss the Marquesas,
4) Tuamotus are low lying, very low lying islands,
5) when in Papeete, ask further,
6) it takes time - distances are large,
7) it is worth it.

Bon voyage,
b.
