Short Term Anchoring in Key West

How safe is it?
How safe is it to leave your boat and go ashore?

Without going into detail, I was just warned by a neighbor to not go. Sounded like the usual BS horror stories that one buys into about a location that they haven't even been to, or at least not been to in a while. You know pirates and robbers and murderers and...

I was also warned to stay out of Mexico, because of course I'll get my boat impounded. Care to comment on that one Zee?

Re: Short term anchoring in Key West.

I have heard stories.... But never first hand. I have kept a boat in KW for the last 20 years, both on a mooring and at a marina.... Never had an issue. For the most part the neighborhood is self policing...

Re: Short term anchoring in Key West.

Thanks! That's sort of what I figured. Just like anywhere else.

Anywhere you travel there's going to be SOME robberies. Just a few days ago in Largo, someone had their dinghy cut from the mothership while they were aboard watching TV. They found it the next day with the motor gone.

Doesn't mean that dinghy theft is a problem here. It was just one incident. The same guy who told me to avoid Key West, is the one who told me about the dinghy incident, yet they're planning on staying here long term.

Lemme know if you are heading down! BTW, I have a mooring if you need one... about 1 mile to the KW Bight dinghy dock
