Shipping parts to the Bahamas

I've just heard about a 48% tax on boat parts brought in to the bahamas.... I am planning some upgrades to my boat in the exumas, and I was just going to pack the parts into a checked suitcase and bring them over that way until I heard about a friend whose replacement watermaker parts are being held at the airport pending a $3900 import tax!!

What?!?

Anybody else heard about this? Anybody know of a good workaround?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Shipping parts to the Bahamas

The vat (duty) depends on the product... it can be as high as 65%......doing upgrades in the exumas will be hard and expensive... if you need boat parts that is a result of being in distress ... you must submit your cursing permit number and there should be no duty... however if it is a new hatch or a swim ladder... get ready to pay.....
And if you think your guest is bringing it on a plane while they visit ... you may want to think that one over ...both my kids on separate occasions where questioned about boat parts at customs... guest will have to fill out a form on where they are staying in the Bahamas , and they filled it out say that they are staying on a boat..

We ran into to two people where there boat products where being held at the airport customs that there guest had been instructed to bring...
It's a slippery slope
Ohh.... my kids brought me candy like gummy worms and sour rings from the dollar store... that was no problem and they were free to go
