Scalloping trip

Looking into making a trip to crystal river region from Tampa bay with the hopes of finding safe overnight anchorage near the scallop beds. I’ve been there several times to scallop but I’ve never seen any sailboats at anchor, obviously secondary to depth. Any insights of how to pull this off?...I don’t really want to row 100 yards before and after scalloping. Also are there any other dangers I should be aware of besides lightning and drunks?

Re: Scalloping trip

Have you looked at charts or Active Captain?

It's pretty skinny through that entire area. It's going to be ride in and out. Depending on prevailing wind, you could be exposed.

Re: Scalloping trip

We went a couple of weeks ago (Land-based, not by sailboat). It's a thin year - there are about a fourth the number of scallops as there were last year.

And there aren't sailboats there for a reason. It's really shallow for miles, even in the channels. So plan carefully, and probably plan to dinghy in a long ways. Plan for the weather, as you'll be exposed.
