Sapphire Bay USVI
We are looking for Local Knowlege on Sapphire Bay. Mooring, anchoring, available slips, restaurants, shops, etc. Great place or don't bother.
Thanks

Re: Sapphire Bay USVI
There isn't much anchorage in there - it's a large open bay with a hotel beach and coral bottom, as usual in USVI. I've never seen anyone anchor there and given how open it is - I wouldn't try.
There is a marina that is attached to Sapphire Bay resort. It is small, with a dog-leg difficult entrance through a jetty and fully filled with commercial/charter boats.
Oh yes, the beach is ok, I liked it enough - but it's not the best in St. Thomas. There is one restaurant there - nothing to write home about. Sapphire bay is pretty close to Red Hook though (you could even walk, at least during daytime ) where all the good stuff is.
Of course Red Hook/Vessup bay is where everyone anchors on that side.

Agree with most all of Brak's comments. Sapphire does occasionally have some transient slips for monohulls and powerboats. Unless you have a very specific reason to be there, as in you are renting a condo, it would probably be better to head towards Red Hook. Other than the restaurant, there isn't much at Sapphire. If you were to go to Red Hook, Vessup Bay to anchor or American Yacht Harbor for a slip, you are a short walk or dinghy ride from a dozen bars/restaurants, grocery store and a chandlery. Sapphire is much more isolated.
If you could be more specific as to what you are looking for and how long you intend to stay, I could provide better suggestions.
Feel free to send me a PM.

The OP requested info about available slips, restaurants and shops.
Not aware of any slips, shops or restaurants near there. Of course I'm not counting the beachwear shop and lunchtime restaurant open until 5 at Megan's.

Re: Sapphire Bay USVI
Actually, the first two things he asked about was mooring and anchoring.

Re: Sapphire Bay USVI
We have anchored in Megens Bay. It's OK but limited as noted above. I didn't mention that we have a dog (Saylor, and English Setter) so taking her ashore is important. At Megens Bay a policeman got out of his car and told us we couldn't bring her ashore, so we went to a little beach on the left side going in. Stayed one night. My purpose for asking is that we move around the USVI and BVI and are always looking for new spots to try out. Don't really need much on shore, just easy access for Saylor. Our favorite marina is Yacht Haven Grande in St. Thomas and our favorite isolated beach is at Long Bay on Virgin Gorda in the BVI. We tend to stay in one place anywhere from 1 to 4 days. Never really know where we will be. We are looking at going to PR soon. Thanks for the input.

Re: Sapphire Bay USVI
How does Saylor like it? We have a fox red lab but thought she would be too big to handle cruising.

Re: Sapphire Bay USVI
Saylor is around 55 lbs. She LOVES it! She gets plenty of excerise running around topside keeping track of the birds and watching for the goats that she hears and sometimes sees. We have an electronic collar so we let her run free on some of the beaches when nobody is there. She loves to swim and will swim along the beach until I call her in. She also runs full speed up and down the beach. When underway we tether her in the cockpit, although we do have a lifejacket for her. She is great company for us and makes us laugh everyday.

Re: Sapphire Bay USVI
For the unidentified person who sent the question: When we take her to the beach we leave nothing behind except foot prints. Which is more than I can say for some humans.

Re: Sapphire Bay USVI
Fullmoon,
Although my knowledge of Sapphire Bay is very limited (dropped off some guests at the marina a week ago), I have circumnavigated St. John four times this cruising season, just because I like it so much and because it provides a wide variety of activities for guests.
I tried attaching an MS Excel spreadsheet that provides a skeleton for a week cruise but it was rejected because of a lack of security token. The dates are easily adjusted with the auto-fill feature. If you would like it for reference for future cruise planning, please send me a PM and I'll try to get it to you another way.

It's a hotel beach, so dog may not be welcome. Marina is a condo, so availability may be hard to chase down. Slips are well protected but manuevering is tight. Approach has two tiny buoys, sometimes lighted, but definitely not a place to enter after dark if you don't know your way. Anchoring not recommended, wide open, but so is Red Hook/Vessup Bay, and people anchor there all the time. Go figure. People run their dogs on the nice sand beach at Vessup Bay.
