Sailing from Progreso

We're looking for a sailboat and hope to use our home here at Puerto Progreso, Yucatan as the home port to explore the Gulf and Caribbean.
So I guess I'm just introducing myself. Anyone with any suggestions for trips, or questions about Progreso or Yucatan, post something! (I'm assuming the Gulf is included under "Atlantic and the Caribbean.")

Visit the Alacran reef. It is just North of you. We have sailed past it twice but didn't stop because we weren't cleared in.

Re: Sailing from Progreso

Yup, Arrecife Alacran is certainly the choice for a first "blue water" cruise. Our local yacht club goes out there a couple of times a year.
Progreso is the main international shipping port for the Yucatan peninsula. We're also the closest beach town to the capital city of Merida. We have a thiving US/Canada expat and snowbird community, but are by no means an expat enclave--when you're here, you're in Mexico.
Just east of us is the most important town in the history of the planet that you've never heard of--that Meteorite That Killed The Dinosaurs struck at Chixculub.
Only one "s" in Progreso!
