Sailing from Greenland to the Caribbean and Ocean Currents ?

I really want to follow in the viking footsteps from Norway and see the Faeroe islands, Iceland, Greenland and Newfoundland. I'm hoping to start my long trip voyage in that direction and then down south to the Caribbean. But I see that ocean currents are going north up the east coast of USA and Canada. I was hoping to go south.

So how smart is it trying to go south from Newfoundland? Anyone have any tips?

For a trip like that you need RS Stavanger...or something like her.

Occasionally, a cruise ship takes the "Viking" route. That may be a more practical solution.

I think it's best to do the Atlantic Circle clockwise--tradewind passage to the Caribbean, then up the N American coast to Saint Johns, Newfoundland, then with the prevailing westerlies back to Europe. With a right boat, people have done the northerly route via Greenland and Iceland.

HI

We are also thinking of sailing to Iceland and Greenland this summer. Last year we were in Norway and this year our boat is in Scotland. We may start with a stop in the Faeroes, then cross to Iceland from there. Our final destination is Newfoundland.

This guy did that very route!

Take a look at this guys blog. He is now in Florida. He left from the Isle of man and went to Iceland and past Greenland ( said he couldnt stop because of weather) and on to St. Johns. Zarafina's Web Diary - Melvyn Brown
