I've done it both ways. Three years ago I helped a person bringing a
C&C 41 up by the Cape on the Ocean side, and one year ago I brought my
Tobago 35 through the
ICW to look for
parts and avoid bad
weather.
If the
weather allows it, ie: weather forecasts give you a good enough window; you will do well by going far enough off. You can travel day and night, and you will more likely be able to sail. This one experience doesn't make me an expert, but there was no difference off the Cape from anywhere between Cape Fear and Boston. The weather reports are the key, I guess.
The inside
route does not allow for night travel, in my estimation; and you will be surprized at how much longer it takes. However, there are things to see that will make great memories. Stop in to Oriental for some ice cream, and visit the local chandleries, see the creatures that inhabit the shallow lakes, have a look at the interesting traffic on the
ICW. The inboard side of Norfolk is pretty interesting, as is their main harbour.
I note that this
email is too late for your trip - sooo, tell us how you did it!
