Helps to know where you're at. But for starters try: Tortugal | rio dulce, guatemala .

Good friends are there now and I know Dean has no worries for them.

I would haul out at Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor in the BVI or Chagaramas in Trinidad. In Trinidad you would almost be 100% safe from hurricanes. I would be happy to have Exit Only in either location during hurricane season.

In the water or out? What type and size of boat do you have?

Trinidad and Tobago are the classic spot to put your boat when you need it out of the way during hurricane season.

If you leave the boat in Chaguaramas, it should be on the hard. Based on what we saw going on in the anchorage yesterday during the feeder bands that came through, I wouldn't trust the moorings in the anchorage for anything. In fact, I'm not sure I would leave a boat unattended at a dock here. Although we didn't get much wind or rain from Dean, we definitely got some wave action coming in from the Gulf of Paria, and the rocking and rolling was nasty.

The boat needs to be out of the water at both Chaguaramas and Tortola.

Chaguaramas has poor holding in a relatively deep anchorage. I would never trust a mooring for my cat in a real blow. My 70 pound Beugel anchor with an all chain rode gives me my best chance for survival. My cat is a privilege 39 with a beam or 21 feet, but they can haul out fifty foot cats without a problem at the different boat yards there.

Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour has dry storage, but I don't know the maximum beam they can haul. I know that they can haul out my Privilege 39.

I just flew back from BVI last week. Effectively no "on hard" storage on Tortola or Virgin Gorda. Only real chance is to have an inside contact with one of the operators and when/ if another boat is pulled you get the spot. I know of one large boat that was pulled giving 3 spaces for smaller boats and all 3 were taken the same day... luckily I have one. You really have to set things up and pay early to have space in BVI. I understand St. Thomas is about the same. One new yard at Sophers Hole may have some availability but not sure of their equipment or how "safe" the yard is... looks very low wet... of course it Was Raining for several days but the mud was extensive.

With the current Hurricane coming through your way, there will be NO safe places anywhere. Maybe a few that a less dangerouse than some others, but all in all, I would say this one is a lottery. Even on the hard is going to have as many issues. The boat will need to be well anchored down and a good distance between it and other boats so if she or others do fall over, they won't hit each other. Either that, or tie them all up really close so as it becomes one large raft. I doubt much of anything in the water is going to survive this one.

Bahia Redonda in Puerto La Cruz, VZ is also full for the season. Worth considering for next year - very nice place and the USD is still worth something:
