Rio Dulce - Florida March 2013?

I am a US expat living in Guatemala and am new to this forum and to sailing/cruising. I would love to join a crew from Rio Dulce to Miami, Florida in March 2013 if it's possible, but have no idea how this works. Do I need to have extensive experience sailing to join a crew?
