Reason no ones goes west of cuba ?

If you are headed down to the Islands from Florida (BVI etc, not Bahama's) I have read about the Thorny Path and I-65.. but not much is said about going West around Cuba, looks like you could stop by Cayman Isls, Jamaica etc even if you are not permited to stop at Cuba like most Americans... looks like this route might save you from some of the problems of the Thorney Path and is not as far from land as I-65... I know there must be a reason... I am just too new to know... help ?

Cheers

Re: Reason no ones goes west of cuba ?

Jamaica is not regarded as great place to cruise. Check noonsite to see why...

Check your route. The Gulfstream rips through there pretty good (between Cuba and Mexico, on up to Florida). Also, I'm guessing you will have an east wind on your nose once you get under Cuba. There have been a few discussions previously about doing that route. Maybe those with experience will jump in.

I delivered a 65' Cat from Nassau to Panama and went west of Cuba and it was a fine voyage. More details in my story here:

heading easy to west you would be bashing directly into the caribbean trade winds with nowhere to hide until to made it to haiti .. a good way to damage your boat or whatever relationships you might have with your crew

Re: Reason no ones goes west of cuba ?

A lot of folks go west of Cuba and then head down to Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, and Colombia. We did it, but it was a pretty good slog dead to windward from the western tip of Cuba down to Swan Island and then Providencia. I think the better way to go would be to head over to Mexico, down to Belize, on to Guatemala, then Honduras, and work your way down the coast. We were pushing hurricane season in late May and wanted to get down there fast, so we just headed towards Panama. Glad we did, because a tropical wave went right over us in Providencia which later became a tropical storm as it went over Honduras.
