You could time your arrival for the school summer holidays.

Great idea!

Similar to your plan, I crewed for a friend NYC-Bermuda-Azores. My wife flew in and met us in Horta. We spent over a month touring Portugal. Loved it. Plan to return.

Hey Belize, I really enjoyed your slideshow. I may have to change plans now ! There were so many lovely places. And I love a good Port, it would be worth it to go there for that reason alone. Thank you for more places to consider !

Life in Portugal is relatively cheap and you can rent a decent place for less than $1000/mth..
Travel around the country by rail is also reasonable so if you have a base for your boat like say Fig da Foz, good marina with decent rates (a 39ft boat was costing me €1800/yr) 500metres from the station you could either rent a car to tour or (my preference) use the train as I do and save money.. its great fun and the trains are clean, I use 1st class.
Porto is worth a week or 2 at least, Lisbon the same.. its a great country and the food and wines are ace.
Sao Miguel to the mainland is just over 800nm so 7 days sailing..

Glad you liked it. Yes, I think Portugal would be a great hurricane season option too!

If you like Port, spend some time in the Duro valley. I was never a big port fan until we tried a 35 year old tawny there...OMG good!

Hmmm...I had not really considered it, but that's certainly an attractive sounding option. If I end up staying too long I might have to ! Lol

And the good news is the Duro river is navigable nearly all the way to the Spanish border.. 200kms.. so you can take your boat up there.. Spectacular.
