Not at all - very strong currents, large commercial traffic, frequent fog, etc.

absolutely not, the closest place to drop a hook from there is someplace out of the way in Fishers Island Sound.

From the race or gut, head north to the ledge lighthouse, and turn right at the bifurcated bouy and follow the channel into fishers island sound. There is plenty of anchorage on either Connecticut side or fishers island side of FIS.

If you're looking to spend the night, Stonington, CT has an anchorage area marked out. If just waiting for a tide change I'd use and have used West Harbor on the north side of Fishers Island. You might also be able to anchor near the beach after entering plum (from LIS gut toward Greenport, NY

I saw small power boats anchored around Plum Gut fishing every time I went through but they were obviously on watch non-stop. I wouldn't consider either spot for overnight.

As others have already responded; no, neither one is a "safe" place to anchor.
Several good suggested spots have been posted... our prefered spot is West Harbor (Fishers Island) with good holding and reasonable protection. Also quick in and out when continuing North or South.

Re: Plumb gut or the race long island sound

We put in at Mattituck Inlet
but stayed at Strongs Marina
I believe there were some boats anchored
but best to check.
Great Spot
You got to time the Race to get through
Current at max is about 5 Knots
Cheers
