Plum Gut then Coecles Harbor
We are exploring Long Island Sound for the first time. We just went from Noank to Coecles Harbor/ Shelter Island via Plum Gut. It is almost as exciting as Wood Hole. Poking along at 1-2 kts SOG until in the matter of a few minutes we were being flushed thru at 9 kts! If that wasn't enough fun for the day we headed to Coecles Harbor for the first time. There is a narrow dredged channel which is pretty well marked but you gotta have faith. Once in though it is fantastic. It no doubt helps that this is early June. No one else is here. Next to poke around the Peconic Bays.

Re: Plum Gut then Coecles Harbor
Congrats, you are now in one of the nicest cruising areas in all of North America, IMO.. Not very big, but some great spots to visit, and wonderful sailing. Usually a nice sea breeze and very little chop.
Enjoy!

I second that! Gardiners Bay is great daysailing, and surrounded by pleasant harbors. Enjoy!

Re: Plum Gut then Coecles Harbor
The next time, try going through the more Eastern cut between the other end of Plum Island and Gull Island. The Race is very narrow there and the currents less and crossing it is much shorter. Also, no other boat traffic. Plum Gut can get very hectic with the strong current and ferry and other boat traffic.

Re: Plum Gut then Coecles Harbor
I like colemj route also. Been on it many times. Much better than Plum Gut
hlev00, Now that you are at Shelter Island you may want to go all the way around and visit all the good harbors,
Threemile Harbor, just east of Coecles Harbor a short distance across the bay.
Sag Harbor
West Neck Harbor
Greenport or anchor in Dering Harbor and dingy over

It is really beautiful. We never knew what was back here.
We tried getting into West Neck Harbor (Shelter Island) this afternoon, but it got way to shallow too quickly. We don't have a lot of confidence in our depth sounder as the boat is relatively new to us. Before we try again, we need to calibrate. Has anyone been in there and know of the real depths?

Re: Plum Gut then Coecles Harbor
We want to get into West Neck Harbor but draw 5' 7". We found the entrance a little on the thin side this afternoon. We had low tide and following breeze against us so we bailed out. What have you found at the entrance between G1 and R2?
Do you have any experience with the creeks off of the Peconics or elsewhere?
Thanks,
harry

Sorry Harry, can't help you because it's been about 25 years since I have been there. Sounds like some other folks might be able to. Good luck!

Last time I was there about 4 years ago, it was pretty much as charted. We anchored off the beach in the south end of the harbor.

Re: Plum Gut then Coecles Harbor
hlev00,
We have been going in West Neck every year. My Catalina 380 draws 5'-6" and went in no problem. You depth sounder is picking up the weeds in the channel. I does seem low, but its just weeds. You will have no problem going in there.
