Passes Out of Sarasota Bay ?

Looking for local knowledge on the options for getting into the Gulf from Sarasota Bay--- the guide books make New Pass sound like a death sentence, followed by Big Pass, with Longboat Pass seemingly preferred. Yet, there is talk of a local yacht club maintaining marks for Big Pass and the Coast Guard maintaining marks on New Pass (but not Big Pass). Anyone with recent, local, knowledge? I am headed south (to Ft. Myers and the start of the Okeechobee Canal).

Thanks,

Thanks,
I recommend Long Boat Pass only. The other passes are shoaled in and dangerous. I've had groundings in Big Pass and New Pass and will never go there again. There may be some "local knowlege" channels for shallow draft boats, but I wouldn't try it.

Big pass is perfectly fine right now. Marks are in place, and purely functional. Just to back this up, for the 4th of July boat races, I ran a 110' motoryacht drawing nearly 7' out the channel.

Indeed, the passes here are generally horrible, and shoaling is the only constant - however occasionally nature agrees with us, and allows us in and out without traveling to Longboat or Venice. This is one of those times. Use it while you can... it's great.

Sarasota Yacht Club makes an effort to survey and post the current status of the various passes on its website.

Without any significant storms (none recently) then the shifting is not much. The picture shows a lot of 7' plus depth. It would appear to me that you should not have a problem.
