1. When do you need them?

2. Are older charts and chartkits acceptable?

Not to jump, but have you looked at the 2/3 black and white charts printed from bellingham chart printers? I got some, they're great, and the price is right.

OK I'll try to get you a list, but if you tell me what your timeframe is that would help me.

I know I can sell you a fairly recent set of the three Explorer Chartkits for the Bahamas. They are excellent.

I'm also pretty sure I can get you some older US East Coast chartkits.

As for Caribbean charts, I have some as well. Plus cruising guides for all areas.

Hi -- I am leaving Rode Island mid Oct 2010 and will sail down to Hilton Head -off shores as much as I can but would like -say older charts- as a back up --I have chart plotters. Then from Hilton Head--say Jan 1 to Fort Launderdale -and across the Caribbean for the winter --would like to reach Trinadad -thanks

The problem with older paper charts is that it will take forever to make the chart corrections. They also have a greater chance for the datum to be incorrect or the geodetic information may be incorrect from older surveys.

Old paper charts do make great looking wrapping paper.

If you want paper as your backup then the chart kits come with more recent paper charts.

OK, that gives me some time to come up with a list for you. I have some here, some on my boat, some in storage, etc. I should be able to get back to you soon with some info, but I will concentrate on the most recent charts.

Also, I will be in and around Newport so I could meet with you for the handoff if you want to buy any of them.

We have some older charts for the areas you are interested in, but I wouldn't recommend using them. Some years ago we were crossing Cape Fear during a torrential rain and lightning storm, and found the buoy numbers mismatched with our older charts as well as our radar not functioning due to the amount of water in the air, and a narrow channel difficult to find (not to mention huge biting flies that came with the rain). Not fun. Check the dates of charts before buying. But we did use Bellingham charts for much of our 4 year cruise and loved them.
