Re: Panama canal vs. Mexico land crossing?

I live in Tampico and my best friends wife owns a logistics company here...I had talked to her about putting my Balboa 26-trailer and all- on a truck to import it...But I finally got it arranged and did it myself...She can probably help you for a Mexican price...not the gringo price.
If you would like to pursue this I can put you in contact with my friend who has good English and he can help you. Email me: all_as@hotmail.com
Either way...good luck....email me anyway as I have other contacts
Peace

Re: Panama canal vs. Mexico land crossing?

I started with a boaters' directory. Then traveled as far as Rockport, TX, exploring transport from Seattle area going south. After many transports who wanted their full years' wages from one transport, and others who seemed to know nothing about sailboats, we did manage to safely transport our home to a new location. I couldn't stand the thought of another winter of rain in Seattle. (And last winter they measured the rain in feet.) So even though the weather window for sailing was closed, we went south.

Buy local. Save your money.

Cost for shipping by sea are about the same as trucking when you include all the loading charges. Also avoids the complications and uncertainty of wide load escorts delays etc. There is a regular float on service from Florida to Vancouver but you would have to have a very special boat to make it worth it, are there no suitable boats nearer?

Re: Panama canal vs. Mexico land crossing?

I priced out shipping a 48' from Long Beach to Boston. Came in at $12,500. Not a terrible price considering what I would have to pay a delivery crew to sail her back through the canal. I agree with looking local and comparing those to boats on the other coast plus shipping. That's where I'm at now. I'd rather buy local and use the saved money for new sails. No longer looking at West coast boats.

Florida to the US west coast would be east to west.
